This damage reporting establishes a baseline to address the current state of a textual artifact. By creating this baseline, conservators and curators create a best care practice to preserve, transport, store and handle the piece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Some Conditioning Terms:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Inclusion<\/span>&#8211; a foreign piece of material melded to the document<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Accretion<\/span>&#8211; a small piece of foreign material on the document surface<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Foreign Matter<\/span>&#8211; a larger piece of material not original to the document<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Loss<\/span>&#8211; damaged area with missing pieces of the document<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Patina<\/span>&#8211; tan\/orange discoloration and tint<br><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Foxing<\/span>&#8211; orange\/red spotting<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Condition Report on Sir George Wentworth&#8217;s Will<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Condition Report on a 1699 Scottish Sasine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:50%\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This vellum document has been well preserved. Most damage has been sustained along the edges where there is discoloration and darkening. Some darkening and hyperpigmentation covers text and makes it unreadable. Flink, 2022.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also many patches of vellum loss, dents, micro rips and scratching most likely from handling and fluctuating environmental conditions. Considering the number of creases in the document from folding, it is surprising that more tearing and weakening of the parchment has not occurred.
