Wentworth&#8230;&#8221;\u00a0<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile is-image-fill\" style=\"grid-template-columns:24% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\" style=\"background-image:url(https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles-623x1024.png);background-position:38% 5%\"><a href=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles.png\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"623\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles-623x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-197 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles-623x1024.png 623w, https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles-182x300.png 182w, https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles-768x1263.png 768w, https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles-934x1536.png 934w, https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Map-British-Isles.png 937w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 623px) 100vw, 623px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#ede9dda6\">In transcribing, we identified <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/solving-the-mystery\/people\/\" target=\"_blank\">people<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/lost-in-transcription\/solving-the-mystery\/places\/\" target=\"_blank\">place<\/a> names.\u00a0 When compiling and comparing, it became clear that most documents were Scottish, and tied to the Fisher and Auld families who lived about 20 miles south east of Edinburgh.\u00a0 A single English will, which turned out to be linked to the Wentworth family of Wentworth-Woodhouse, provided a fascinating counterpoint.<br><br>In translating, we began to understand how land tenancy and inheritance worked for those with some resources in early modern Great Britain.<br><br>Below, learn a little about the three sets of documents.\u00a0 Click on the collection to be taken to a page that provides links to each documents, a finding aid for each, and a transcription and translation of the text. <strong>[In Process]<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-extra-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">This map, from a 19th c. atlas, shows the United Kingdom in the seventeenth century.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"background-color:#ede9dda6\"><strong>England<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-yellow-background-color has-background has-small-font-size wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"wentworth\">(1) Sir George Wentworth, <a href=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/beitknown\/the-documents\/wentworth-will-and-codicil\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"208\">Will and Codicil<\/a>, 1655 and 1656<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/beitknown\/the-documents\/fisher-documents\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"210\">Scotland (Fisher<\/a> Family)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-yellow-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Five sasines (land indentures) are from John Fisher, portioner of Manuel-Foulis (Crownerland) and his son, also John Fisher.  One, from 1679, assigns half the lands of Manuel-foulis (Crounnerland) to Margaret Whitlaw, John Fisher&#8217;s wife.  The other four, are from 1699 and document John Fisher and his wife Helen Younger taking over the indenture from William Ker, the landowner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-yellow-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">(2) John Fisher assigns land and rents from half the property of Maneul-Foulis to his wife, Margaret Whitlaw, 1679.<br>(3) Precept of Saasine of John Fishar (Fisher) 1699<br>(4) Precept of Sasine of John Fisher and wife Helen Younger, 1699<br>(5) John Fisher legal proceedings indicating inheritance, 1699<br>(6) Property inheritance of James Fisher, 1699<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-dark-gray-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/beitknown\/auld-documents\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"212\">Scotland (Auld Family)<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-yellow-background-color has-background wp-block-paragraph\">Three sasines are from landowner Patrick Auld of Torbane Hill, near Bathgate, from 1698 and 1699.
