What you can\u2019t see are the underground roots, make up a vast and complex interconnected system. Though these roots are not connected to each other themselves, they are joined into a network by fungi.<em>\u00a0<\/em>This creates a system of connectivity among tree roots that enables trees to communicate with each other and share information and resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-772-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-772-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-772-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<h2>A tangled web underfoot<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tree roots and this underground system of connectivity all rely heavily on\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mycorrhizal networks. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are networks of fungi living beneath the surface, connecting tree roots to each other. The mushrooms that you see growing in a forest represent only a small part of the fungus - its fruiting body, or reproductive structures. The rest of the fungus is underground, made up of threadlike structures called mycelia. \u00a0In some species of fungus, these mycelia colonize and link the roots of two or more trees. Scientists Suzanne Simard and Daniel Durall\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nrcresearchpress.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1139\/b04-116#.WUwWL3XyuRs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have summarized<\/a> the many roles of mycorrhizal networks, which allow trees to transfer nutrients such as carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, or water among themselves.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What do these connections do?<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3722\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3722\" style=\"width: 468px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/crandallparktrees\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TreeRoots.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3722\" src=\"http:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/crandallparktrees\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TreeRoots.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"414\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/crandallparktrees\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TreeRoots.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mdocs.skidmore.edu\/crandallparktrees\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/06\/TreeRoots-300x266.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 468px) 100vw, 468px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3722\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exposed tree roots<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\">Mycorrhizal networks enable trees to do many things. Researchers at the University of British Columbia <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs00442-008-1136-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have shown<\/a> that mycorrhizal networks enable \u201chub trees\u201d to pass nutrients to smaller trees and seedlings. Hub trees play a crucial role in the overall connectivity and nutrient distribution in tree communities. Hub trees are larger trees who are able to transfer nutrients through mycorrhizal networks, via their roots to help smaller trees. Seedlings often receive nutrients and resources from these hub trees through mycorrhizal networks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; font-size: 16px;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/25592815?seq=1#page_scan_tab_contents\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A related study<\/a> showed that that the size of the hub tree was inversely related to the amount of carbon transferred to seedlings. Seedling survival tended to be greater, and water stress lower, where seedlings had full access to the mycorrhizal network.
