In 2008, a group of researchers led by Robert McDonald\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu\/sites\/harvardforest.fas.harvard.edu\/files\/publications\/pdfs\/McDonald_ForestEcologyandManagement_2008.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">performed a study<\/a>\u00a0where they looked at the effects of minimal, frequent logging activity (at about 1% intensity) on plant diversity. This study was important because it showed that some logging can actually boost plant growth and area diversity. In areas with rich soils, they saw almost a doubling of plant biodiversity with low-intensity logging. Lichen are actually a fungus living closely with another organism (either algae or cyanobacteria). What you can\u2019t see are the underground roots, make up a vast and complex interconnected system.
